Meet Demelza’s Highly Specialist Pharmacist

Sian Gaze is a senior paediatric pharmacist at the Evelina London Children’s Hospital and joined Demelza’s team in 2018, offering vital support one day each week to the Clinical Governance and Care Teams across our three sites.

An always-friendly and approachable addition to Demelza's team, Sian enjoys meeting families face-to-face to discuss medication regimens. However, as the pandemic has led more and more team members to working in a virtual environment, she has been running her pharmacy pre-admission clinics via the telephone and communicating with families via email. Through the evolution of electronic medication charts, Sian has been able to accurately transcribe each medication a child is taking, so that the chart can be printed and reviewed by nursing staff, alongside the child’s medications when they arrive for their stay.

As a key member of the Clinical Governance Team, Sian’s role includes reviewing medication procedures and making improvements. She is involved with developing and updating medication-related guidelines and policies, and delivers monthly training and education sessions to nurses and health care assistants, most recently via Zoom. This helps to keep the team up-to-date with any medication-related changes in practice, to ensure that children at Demelza receive the highest level of evidence-based care.

Away from Demelza, Sian works closely alongside paediatric palliative care colleagues at the Evelina London Children’s Hospital and with other children’s hospices in London and the South East to ensure that best practice is shared across the network.

Sian shares, “Over the past three years, I have enjoyed getting to know the families at Demelza and the staff members, across all of the sites”.
