The awards, which were sponsored by Hastings Direct, recognised the heroic efforts of so many key workers, neighbours, communities, families and friends who have helped to keep the public safe and healthy during the coronavirus pandemic and served as an opportunity to say a big thank you to those that have done so much to help others during the past 12 months.

Elle, 26 and from Bexhill, was shortlisted for the award earlier this year and was delighted to win at the award ceremony which took place on 21 October at Shackleton Hall in Eastbourne. Elle has worked at Demelza Hospice, based in St Leonards, East Sussex, for nearly five years, and provides care in the local community to children with serious or terminal conditions.

Elle was nominated for the award by local fundraiser Don McPhee, as well as Rosie Aldridge, whose son, Alfie, is supported by Demelza. Elle attended the event with Demelza colleagues, Jane Witham and Jenna Heritage. Elle said: “I am so honoured to be given this award - working with the children and families is something I really love and is reward enough but it is fantastic to be recognised in this way – thank you”.

Melissa Mungovan, Lead Nurse at Demelza in East Sussex, said: “Everyone at Demelza is so proud of Elle for winning this award and for the passion and dedication she shows when working with families under our care. Our staff and families have been tested more than ever during the past 18 months and we are all delighted Elle has been recognised for her hard work – well done Elle!”
