Denise shares how her role as a finance and reception volunteer at Demelza has allowed her to learn new skills and socialise with different people.
Denise started volunteering at Demelza at the end of 2021 on Reception at our Kent Hospice. She is kept very busy with lots of administration tasks, dealing with incoming and outgoing post and parcels, telephone messages and welcoming visitors.
At the beginning of 2023, Denise joined our Finance Department too, so she now covers two areas. She really enjoys this role as well, doing lots of scanning, checking, dealing with cheque receipts and labelling cash bags.
Prior to retirement, Denise worked as a Catering Manager for an outdoor activity centre, so very different to her volunteering roles. One of the many benefits of volunteering is to be able to try new things and gain new experience.
Denise really enjoys volunteering and would recommend it. She said “It keeps my brain ticking over and gives me an escape from my day-to-day routine at home. I have learnt new skills, I get to socialise with different people and whilst on Reception I really enjoy meeting staff and other volunteers and I love the meet and greet and helping Demelza families.”
